Arsenal lose to Everton by own goal

Arsenal conceded a 1-0 home defeat to Everton in the English Premier League on Friday night. A mistake by “Gunners” goalkeeper Bernd Leno was decisive.

Everton remains in eighth place in the table and with 52 points is just one point behind Seventh Liverpool and within striking distance of a ticket for the UEFA Champions League. Arsenal, on the other hand in ninth place with 46 points, lost further ground to the European Cup places.

Everton still believes in the Champions League

Everton coach Carlo Ancelotti said his team is still fighting for a place in the top four and said the race could last until the last game of the season. “We’re still at the head of the table,” said Ancelotti. “We have to keep fighting.”

Arsenal seemed to have the match under control in the early stages. But Everton began to cause the Gunners more and more problems. A free kick by Gylfi Sigurdssons (39th) that hit the crossbar gave the midfielder a chance to take the lead in the 47th minute, but Arsenal’s center-back Rob Holding blocked the ball for a corner.

After the Brazilian Richarlisons went it alone, his shot finally found its way through Arsenal goalkeeper Leno’s legs over the line. “The most beautiful goal I’ve ever seen,” said Everton defender Mason Holgate ironically.
