Army vehicles shield the RIVM building from tractors

During the farmers’ protest of tomorrow, army vehicles will be parked at the RIVM building in Bilthoven. That confirms the Ministry of Defense. A spokesman for Acting Mayor Den Oudsten of Utrecht, who is chairman of the safety region, says that they should prevent vehicles from getting too close.

About fifteen army trucks and about 40 soldiers are deployed. They close streets. According to the spokesman for Den Oudsten, they must protect the building of the health institute, also because of the work at RIVM. The building should not vibrate.

Today forbidden the Utrecht Safety Region agreed to come to the protest with agricultural vehicles, because the organizing action group Farmers Defense Force could not indicate how many tractors will come to the demonstration. The demonstrators are not welcome at the RIVM building, but may demonstrate at the Biltse Rading. There is room for 2000 people there.

Animal health

The FDF reacted angrily to the ban. Foreman Mark den Oever calls on his supporters to come by car. He also said that he cannot “blame any farmer if they drive the tractor.”

The farmers are taking action against the government’s nitrogen policy. In particular, they protest against the planned reduction in the permitted amount of protein in animal feed. Minister Schouten wants to limit the amount of protein in the feed to reduce nitrogen emissions. The farmers say it is harmful to the health of their animals.

Blockage

In previous peasant protests in The Hague army vehicles were also deployed. In Bilthoven the municipality also once asked for support for defense, but it did not get there.

The vehicles are only used this time to form a blockade. This is done in consultation with the police. Furthermore, the army has no role in the protest tomorrow, says Defense.
