Armistice Day Azerbaijan and Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh Talks

Azerbaijan and Armenia have agreed an armistice. The Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov announced this. Lavrov spent more than ten hours in Moscow negotiating with both sides to end the violence in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The armistice goes into effect this afternoon. From that moment on, prisoners and dead can be exchanged. The battle would have claimed the lives of at least dozens of people in recent days alone.

Both sides had already told French President Macron earlier this week that they are willing to cooperate in a solution to the conflict. Macron had called the leaders of both countries and called for a truce. The United Nations, NATO, the United States and Canada also wanted a ceasefire.

Talk, no concessions

Azerbaijan and Armenia have now said again that they want to talk to each other about ending their conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, but that is not without a struggle.

Azerbaijani President Aliev said earlier that while he wants to talk about the disputed region, he does not want to make concessions to Armenia. There will be no talks, according to Alieev, if Armenia insists on the belief that the region in Azerbaijan is part of Armenia, he said in a television address.
