Yerevan has 25 years to develop a new name for Armenian brandy, its advertising and marketing in the domestic and foreign markets.

The Armenian authorities have ratified an agreement with the European Union, by which they pledged to abandon the word “cognac” in the names of Armenian alcoholic beverages for three million euros in financial assistance. About this on Thursday, June 10, reported PanArmenian edition.

It is noted that the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement between the EU and Yerevan was signed in 2017.

According to the document, the community will provide financial assistance to Yerevan within the framework of the European Neighborhood Instrument program, the purpose of which is to smoothly and effectively stop the use of the geographical indication “cognac” for Armenian products.

In addition, the program provides for the development of a new name for the Armenian brandy, its advertising and marketing in the domestic and traditional foreign markets.

The EU also pledged to help Armenian producers maintain their competitiveness in export markets.

According to the newspaper, Yerevan has 25 years to fulfill its obligations.

As a reminder, in December 2019 Ukraine also refused “cognac“and” champagne “. In accordance with the classification codes of foreign economic activity, products with the names” sparkling wine “and” brandy “will be exported from Ukraine.

The names “cognac” and “champagne” Ukraine has the right to use by the end of 2025.
