Armenia and Azerbaijan tensions after blame attacks | NOW

Tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan have risen on Sunday as both countries accuse each other of attacking each other. Armenia says Azerbaijan has attacked settlements in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Azerbaijan states that Armenia has attacked military positions and civilians.

Armenian forces are said to have brought down two helicopters from Azerbaijan, as well as three drones. Azerbaijan says Armenia has killed civilians in attacks on residential areas and military positions. Azerbaijani forces have advanced into the border area and want to take “retaliatory measures” against Armenia.

Armenia says Azerbaijan has full responsibility for the situation and that there will be an “appropriate military and political response”. The country says it is armed against an “Azerbaijani invasion”.

A state of emergency has been declared in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh and all men are drafted into military service. The military now has authority in these areas.

More common conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh

Nagorno-Karabakh is officially a region of Azerbaijan, but it is actually autonomous. When the Soviet Union fell apart in 1991, the region declared itself independent. There is, however, an Armenian influence in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Both countries have already had multiple conflicts over the area. There is officially a ceasefire, but both countries are accusing each other more often of attacks around the area and along their own border.
