Argentine President Alberto Fernandez on Thursday called for Mercosur’s commercial bloc in South America to unite amid tensions between his government and Brazil, who are more economically liberal.

“I am here for unity,” said Fernandez, at the virtual Mercosur summit of leaders of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

The Argentine president said that the Corona pandemic, the newcomer will force the world to reconsider the economic operations, while admitting that “globalization has become a reality,” according to the daily “La Nacion”.

He cautioned those “looking for their luck individually” in what was interpreted as a reference to Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who strongly advocates the adoption of liberal economic policies.

Bolsonaro called Mercosur to quickly ratify its trade agreement with the European Union, while Fernandez expressed concern about “inconsistencies” in some provisions of the agreement.
