Argentina asked Azerbaijan to arrest the advisor of Khamenei, Ali Akbar Velayati, during his upcoming visit to Azerbaijan for his involvement in the 1994 bombings of the Jewish Center in Buenos Aires.

The states of the second religious summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, are scheduled to attend on November 14 and 15, according to the Israeli newspaper, “The Time”.

According to Argentine investigations, Velayati – who was Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran at the time of the terrorist attack – was involved in the attack and is now an adviser on international affairs for Ali Khamenei.

Under Argentine law, the accused person must have the opportunity to defend himself before a judge. Because most of the Iranians accused of the attack were from high political levels, and did not set foot in Argentina, it was difficult to move the judicial process forward.

The Argentine Foreign Minister summoned the Ambassador of Azerbaijan in Buenos Aires on Friday, expressed his “deep concern” to the Argentine government about the presence of my state in Baku, and requested the cooperation of Azerbaijan “in order to carry out the arrest.”

The bombing of the Amy Jewish Center on July 18, 1994 killed 85 people and injured more than 300. The late Argentine prosecutor Alberto Nisman proved that a Hizbollah attacker had carried out the attack and that Iran had instigated it.

Iran is also believed to be behind the car bombing in front of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, which destroyed it in 1992, and the attack killed 29 people and wounded 242.

The Iranians have been on INTERPOL’s most wanted list since 2007 in connection with the bombing. Among them is Mohsen Rabbani, a cleric and former cultural attaché who did not travel to Colombia in 2016 after political pressure to prevent his official visit to the government. He is believed to be a prominent figure in spreading militancy in Latin America.
