Are drivers driving responsibly in Latvia? 74% pay attention to things next to driving, according to a survey

Most drivers admit that they tend to divide their attention while driving (not only on the road, but also next to things that have nothing to do with driving. There is also no shortage of alcohol users who hope to get caught.) This is revealed by an anonymous driver survey this summer.

Today, with the help of various simulations, traffic experts called to try driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as provided an opportunity to experience the actions of aggressive drivers. At the same time, the collected data on safe and responsible driving habits were presented.

The survey shows that only a quarter of drivers focus only on the road while driving. So everyone else is paying attention to other things as well.

Overall, 36% of respondents do not hide that they have ever been behind the wheel after drinking alcohol. About a quarter have done so within the permissible norm, but 10 percent admit that they have driven a car under the influence. More than half say they have never drunk. Two-thirds say they have tried to dissuade someone from driving at least once in a lifetime.

The driver in the mind of the Lord is unable to concentrate, his sense of time and space deteriorates, as well as his ability to react in time to dangerous situations. The number of drinking drivers does not decrease from year to year in the police records either.

“What worries us most in this case is that in fact a third, even a half, if we take intoxication from per mille to 1.5 and up, then the absolute majority is driving in this severe intoxication,” emphasizes Andris Locs, Deputy Head of the VP Traffic Monitoring and Coordination Office. .

Drivers still drive aggressively and exceed the speed limit. It has also not been possible to eradicate non-driving activities at the wheel. It is also easy to wear seat belts and fasten children in cars.

“The problem that is starting to appear and be marked now is the mutual culture between the bicycle, the scooter and the pedestrian, because they all move on the same streets, on the same roads. In principle, we anticipate that problems could start there, ”says Locs.

Although there is still a lot to improve in the field of work traffic culture, both law enforcement and industry experts point out that the situation is gradually improving. Statistics show that the total number of fatalities, injuries and accidents has decreased.

“There was also a very good example from the police representative that once on Čaka Street it was not possible to turn out of the yard, because no one thought it should be run. But now we are still stopping our vehicles at pedestrian crossings, starting to follow the zipper principle and so on. Because, of course, this culture is improving and generations are changing, ”says Jānis Vanks, the director of the Safe Driving School.

Although often dangerous road situations are caused by aggressive drivers, law enforcement officers urge drivers not to resort to provocations and remind that everyone is responsible for the safety of themselves and their loved ones on the road.
