Are Cars with One Headlight When Indicating Legal? – Answered by Auto Editor Niek Schenk

Ask: ‘I see in many new cars that when they indicate a direction, the normal lights on that side go out. So they temporarily drive with one headlight. I was always taught that you should have two working lights on the front. Has the law changed or is there something wrong with the new car inspection?’

Auto editor Niek Schenk replies: “By law, a car must still have two headlights on in the dark. But temporarily switching off one headlight while indicating direction is allowed. This exception is intended to make the turn signal light more visible. Mainly due to the arrival of LED lighting, the light from headlights has become increasingly brighter. As a result, there is a risk that the smaller bulb of the direction indicator is not or hardly noticeable to other traffic.’
