A new work of art on Darmstadt’s Friedensplatz commemorates the victory over the plague in the sixth century.
Last Saturday, the large sculpture “Archangel Michael 2020” by the steel sculptor Georg-Friedrich Wolf was unveiled on the Friedensplatz in Darmstadt. The artist Wolf is making the work available on loan for a temporary exhibition.
As already reported, the work of art was created from metal parts donated by citizens. It is a reaction to the Corona crisis and is intended to commemorate the Archangel Michael, who, according to legend, defeated the Justinian plague that broke out in the sixth century at the time of Emperor Justinian.

The Darmstadt Archangel is seven meters high and weighs three tons. “The scrap of our prosperity – the security we imagine ourselves to be in our tech-savvy world – becomes a symbol of man’s hubris,” says the city’s message about the work of art.
Wolf created a monument that “connects both the threatening and protective elements of our society; and asks us to clarify our world, to reorient ourselves ”. “With the decision to erect the angel, we are giving a clear commitment to the freedom of art and to the Friedensplatz, as an open forum for discussions and cultural uses,” said Mayor Jochen Partsch (Greens). According to Partsch, he is happy when the work of art can give his viewer “an impulse to reflect”.
