Kuwait also condemned the attack and supports Qatar’s right to respond. The Lebanese president, Joseph Aoun, viewed the attack as a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty, warning of potential expansion of violence. The incident could negatively impact efforts to reduce tension.
According to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, global military spending reached a record high in 2023, reflecting the heightened tensions and conflicts in various regions, including the Middle East (SIPRI 2024).
Understanding the Conflict
Iran’s armed forces confirmed they launched the missile attack against the American air base in Qatar. This was in response to bombings against three of Iran’s nuclear facilities. The Udeid air base, the largest U.S. base in the Middle East, houses approximately 10,000 soldiers and serves as a key headquarters for the United States Central Command (Centcom).
The situation remains volatile. Diplomatic efforts and regional stability will be crucial to preventing further escalation and its dire consequences.
