AR / VR headset: Apple wants a weight of less than 150 grams

Apple’s next mixed reality (augmented reality and virtual reality) headset is expected to weigh less than 150 grams according to Ming-Chi Kuo. The analyst Explain that the product could therefore have a good competitive advantage.

A weight of less than 150 grams for the Apple AR / VR headset

Most of the existing virtual reality headsets weigh more than 300 grams and have an imposing design. Apple is looking not to offer this type of product and instead wants an AR / VR headset with a weight of less than 150 grams. It is certain that it may seem very light if we compare with the competition or even Apple products. An iPhone 12, for example, weighs 164 grams.

At the same time, Kuo reveals that Apple’s mixed reality headset must adopt a hybrid Fresnel lens. It is a type of lens that was invented in 1822 by Augustin Fresnel to replace the mirrors used in the lighting of marine signaling lighthouses which absorbed up to 50% of the luminous flux. Its design allows it to achieve a short focal length for a large diameter, without the weight and bulk required of a standard lens. Most existing virtual reality headsets already use a Fresnel lens.

Each Apple headset would use a total of six Fresnel lenses (a stack of three per eye). Kuo adds that Apple will use lightweight plastic lenses with custom materials and coatings to match the light transmission of glass.

As he announced before, Kuo still talks about an availability of the AR / VR headset from Apple for the course of 2022.
