Apple unveils iPhone SE: the cheapest new iPhone

The iPhone SE has a similar appearance to the iPhone 8, 7, 6S and 6. The phone has a 4.7 inch retina screen with a resolution of 1334 by 750 pixels. The new iPhone SE has the same Apple A13 chip that is also in the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro is sitting.

Unlike other recent iPhones, the new SE does not have a Face ID face scanner. The device instead uses the Touch ID fingerprint scanner in the well-known round home button.

The phone has a 12-megapixel camera with a single wide-angle lens. The device can take portrait photos with artificial depth of field, also with the 7 megapixel selfie camera. Videos can be recorded in up to 4K at 60 frames per second. The SE’s camera does not have a night mode. For comparison, the iPhone 11 has a dual 12-megapixel camera with wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle lenses. The iPhone 11 Pro has a 12 megapixel camera with triple lens: telephoto, wide angle and ultra wide angle lens.

The iPhone SE can be charged wirelessly and, according to Apple, has a battery life of 13 hours when watching videos, about the same length as the iPhone 8.

From 489 euros

The device is available in black, white and red and is available from 489 euros with 64 GB of storage. There are also versions with 128 and 256 GB storage, for 539 and 659 euros respectively. The new iPhone SE can be ordered from April 17. The iPhone SE costs when exchanging an old iPhone from 349 euros.

Earlier cheaper iPhones

Rumors about the new, cheaper iPhone had been passing by for months. Insiders thought that the phone would be announced last month, but that the corona virus led to postponement.

It is not the first time that Apple has presented a cheaper iPhone. In 2013, the company sold the iPhone 5C, a plastic variant of the then also offered iPhone 5S with a new price of 599 euros at the time. A few years later, there was the iPhone SE, which looked like an iPhone 5S from the outside but had slightly newer hardware inside, with a retail price of 489 euros.

Two iPhone presentations per year

Experts think that Apple will now launch new iPhones twice a year: cheap phones in the spring, followed by the new flagships around September. It would mean that later this year the iPhone 12 will be revealed.

Apple would make a significant design change with the iPhone 12 for the first time in years. The phone would be a draft inspired by the iPad Pro with an aluminum band, flat screen and rounded viewing angles.
