Apple is preparing a Touch ID under the screen, it is confirmed

The iPhone 13 will sign the big return of Touch ID, reveals a leak. For the first time, Apple will hide the fingerprint reader under the screen of its smartphones. The Cupertino company is currently testing optical sensor technology.

The Covid-19 pandemic is forcing Apple to adapt. While mouth masks are mandatory in most countries, Face ID facial recognition, introduced in 2017 on the iPhone X, has become completely unnecessary.

Under these conditions, Apple wants to integrate a Touch ID fingerprint reader under the screen of its iPhone 13, reports the Wall Street Journal. Citing information provided by a former Apple employee, the outlet claims that the group recently accelerated the development of its Touch ID under the touch screen.

Also according to the Wall Street Journal, Apple would bet on a optical fingerprint reader. This technology, still under development, would be more reliable and secure than the ultrasonic module integrated under the screen of Samsung smartphones, especially the Galaxy S21. It’s rather surprising: optical technology is considered less reliable (if you have wet or dirty fingers, for example) than ultrasonic readers.

However, Apple is far from wanting to give up Face ID. According to the media, the Californian brand will offer two biometric unlocking technologies on its future iPhones. For the first time, you will be able to unlock the iPhone (and use Apple Pay) with your face or your finger.

As a reminder, several other reliable sources abound in the same direction. This is particularly the case of the famous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Mark Gurman, journalist at Bloomberg. We can therefore advance, with more or less certainty, thatApple is actually experimenting with Touch ID sensors under the screen in its laboratories.

Nevertheless, it is still possible that the manufacturer will change his mind in the coming months, before the validation of the final design and the launch of mass production. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple will not integrate Touch ID under the screen if it is not as responsive as the Touch ID housed in the button of old iPhones. Nothing is over yet.
