Apple iPhone 14 Pro (Max) review.

  • iPhone 14 Pro
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max

Summary

Despite the many similarities to its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro has some good improvements that are worth a look. The camera is very good, especially in low light, and the new dynamic island is a worthy successor to the notch. The screen is also exceptionally good and is the brightest we’ve ever measured. Also, the new always-on feature is very useful. Furthermore, the A16 processor is a real powerhouse that uses energy more efficiently. In short, the iPhone 14 Pro is a beastly phone.

Tweakers says: Ultimate

When Apple released the iPhone 13 series last year, there was a lot of talk about how little innovation it brought. A first look at the 14 Pros we received seems to bring out the same feeling, but it’s not that bad. The devices look almost the same, but if you look closely, there are more than enough small differences on the outside. Inside, even more has changed and many of the new features people have been waiting for from last year’s devices can now be found on the iPhone 14 Pro devices. For example, they come with the always-on feature and a FaceID camera in can handle face masks. In addition, some really new features have been added and existing components have been improved. The new devices have a new SOC, improved cameras and slightly larger batteries. In addition, the Cupertino company has made a change regarding the models it markets.

Goodbye little friend

Apple also released the latest iPhone this year in four versions, namely two “Pro” copies and two cheaper models without a suffix. The first thing that immediately strikes us is that the mini version had to clear the field. Where the 13 series still has a 13 Mini, the 14 series has to do without a smaller one. Instead, Apple releases a larger model that sits between the 14 and 14 Pro. While we often hear from users that there is a need for smaller smartphones, analysts say the demand for smaller smartphones is actually decreasing. In recent years, there have been rumors that Apple will discontinue production of the iPhone 12 Mini. early strike after moderate sales figures and other manufacturers have also announced that the demand for small devices is so small that it is not worth starting. This only became painfully clear when Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky several months ago a petition started to make a small device. If more than 50,000 signatures were collected, the manufacturers would have to make a small device, otherwise Migicovsky would take matters into his own hands and produce such a device. We are now about five months away and the counter has stopped at 37,000 signatures. It makes sense then that Apple didn’t produce a 14 Mini, but instead opted for a larger model: the iPhone 14 Plus.

Another thing that has seen significant growth in the new iPhone range is the price. In this review we focus on the Pro devices and they are more expensive than ever; you also pay more than 2000 euros for the more expensive variant. Relatively speaking, you also get more phone, because the distinction between Pro and non-Pro will be further increased this year. In this review we focus only on the Pro models, we cover the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus in another article. The 14 Pro devices are the only ones with a new design and the screen is not only brighter and shows smoother images, but it also has always-on functionality. The new 48-megapixel main camera is also a Pro exclusive, as is the upgraded ultra wide-angle and telephoto camera. Apple also reserves the new A16 SOC for iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max; the 14 and 14 Plus have to make do with last year’s A15. Are the changes and new additions enough to get you running in the store for these devices? We have tested them extensively and compared iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max with iPhone 13 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.
