Apple hired LG Display to design the screens for its foldable iPhone

Designers need to work on two unique components of foldable smartphones: the hinge, which allows the smartphone to open and close multiple times without breaking, and the screen, which should fold and unfold easily. It seems that Apple’s iPhone Flip is not yet equipped with the latter, which suggests that it is still far from it.

This is what emerges from a report from the Chinese site Digitimes which indicated that, according to internal sources, Apple commissioned LG Display to design (but not necessarily produce) the screens for its first foldable smartphone.

If this report is genuine, it suggests that the iPhone Flip is very early in its development. LG will no doubt take a long time to design a foldable display that works well, including testing, prototyping and patenting various versions, and even once that display is finalized, the smartphone itself has to go through. all of those same steps.

Even after that, the screen and other components will have to go into mass production, and from what is known LG is not ready for this. In other words, Foldable iPhone release date unlikely to be near.

We have heard of several foldable iPhone release dates, but they remain very disparate with a 2 year lag between the dates provided. For now, we can legitimately predict a launch between 2022 or 2023.

When will the iPhone Flip be released?

However, this new rumor suggests that we may find ourselves after this hypothetical date. Are we going to see the iPhone 15 series in 2023 alongside Apple’s first foldable smartphone? While we’ll never have the answer to this day, most importantly with this rumor is the fact that it tells us that Apple does not yet have a screen for its foldable smartphone. This means that we can rule out any leaks or rumors that bring detailed information to the screen, as it will likely be speculation.

But what no one doubts is that the iPhone Flip (or iPhone Fold, it’s unclear how it will hit the market) is unlikely to exist for years to come. We will therefore have to wait before seeing Apple’s first foldable smartphone.
