Apple: Faulty firmware allows AirPods Pro to be replaced

In December 2019, Apple released a firmware update for the AirPods Pro that updates the wireless in-ear headphones from firmware version 2B588 to version 2C54, but withdrew it in mid-January 2020. The first users of the new firmware then complained about poor active noise cancellation.

Low frequencies badly eliminated

Low-frequency ambient noise was worse eliminated with the Noise Cancellation (ANC) update, although this is usually the strength of active noise cancellation. At the same time, however, the bass reproduction has improved slightly, which was probably Apple’s primary goal with the new firmware. Apple itself had not yet commented on the reason for stopping the distribution of the firmware update.

Since the firmware on the AirPods Pro cannot be changed back to an older version by the user, owners of the AirPods Pro who have found poorer active noise reduction can buy their headphones from Apple or an authorized partner against models with the now up-to-date, exchange old firmware 2B588. However, this can currently take several weeks due to delivery bottlenecks. Apple itself can only deliver orders for the AirPods Pro in around a month, partners should have even longer waiting times.

An update would make the exchange at Apple superfluous

So far, Apple does not offer a new firmware version that corrects the problem and can also be installed with AirPods Pro that has already been updated to version 2C54. This would make an exchange at Apple superfluous. It is not known why Apple does not repack the old version and offers it for updating.

Which firmware is used on the AirPods Pro can be checked in the settings of a paired iPhone (Settings> General> Info> “Individual name of the AirPods Pro”).
