The alleged breakup of Apple’s union prompted federal action. What Los New York Times relationships, the National Labor Relations Board filed a lawsuit against Apple following allegations of violating several laws in an attempt to thwart union organizers at the World Trade Center store in New York City. The Communications Workers of America (CWA) union says Apple monitored and interrogated staff, restricted access to pro-union flyers, and made employees listen to anti-union speeches.
The NLRB considered it sufficient to rely on two of the complaints. A judge will hold a hearing on December 13 if there is no agreement.
We asked Apple for a comment. In a statement a Times, a spokesperson said the iPhone maker disputed the CWA’s allegations and expected to “present the facts”. In the past, Apple has argued that unionization would hinder better work and prevent “direct engagement” between the company and the store workers. Apple told staff it would raise salary, but also that unionization could lead to fewer promotions and fixed hours.
There is no certainty that the NLRB complaint will lead to a change in Apple’s working practices. However, it comes when teams from various US stores have made offers to unionize. While people in one Atlanta location gave up their efforts, workers in Towson, Maryland voted for a union this spring. Oklahoma City employees vote next week. There is growing pressure on Apple to take action, if only to minimize similar complaints.
