Apple Expands Independent Repair Program to Mac

Apple just announced that it is expanding the Independent Repair Provider program to the Mac. This program was released initially in the United States and was initially limited to out-of-warranty iPhone repairs. Now, with this expansion, companies like Sandgren Electronics AB of Sweden or GreenMind APS of Denmark will have access to more and better tools to carry out the repairs of our Macs.

Official repairs in more locations and for more products

While Apple products are among the most durable on the market and enjoy significant company support, when you need a repair, who do you turn to? Sometimes the official Apple Stores are far from our location. In this context, Apple launched a program last fall to certify that a repair made by third parties has the same quality as the official one. The success of the program has been such that currently Apple has more than 140 companies in the United States that together add more than 700 new locations where to go for a repair.

This program has initially focused exclusively on iPhone repair, but today the company announces its extension to the Mac. With this program the network of Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP) grows to 5,000 participants.

With the extension of this program the participating companies have access to official parts and tools, as well as internal Apple training about the repair process. Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, broke the news in the following terms:

We are excited to expand our Independent Repair Provider program to Mac, giving customers an additional way to repair their Mac with genuine Apple parts. We want people to have access to a safe and reliable solution when a device needs to be repaired; This new expansion joins the thousands of repair sites we have added over the past year. We want to bring that comfortable and reliable repair experience to our Mac users.

GreenMind’s director, Jakob Højland, has expressed himself like this about form part of IRP software:

Being a part of the IRP program has greatly increased our repair business at GreenMind. Having access to Apple parts, tools, and internal training has been a game-changer for our organization, and we are very excited to also offer Mac repairs thanks to this program.

His namesake at Sandgren Electronics, Patrik Sandgren, has also praised the increase in the flexibility to offer different alternatives quality for customers:

Access to genuine iPhone parts, manuals, and testing tools is great for us and our customers alike, and we’re excited to hear that Mac parts will be available for us soon. The flexibility in the Independent Repair Provider program gives us the opportunity to offer a variety of quality customer alternatives, which we appreciate. Having the same flexibility for Mac repairs is great news for us and all of our customers. We are eager to start training.

Clearly, expanding your options when it comes to getting a Mac repaired is good news. With this kind of program, Apple makes sure that the repairs that we can find outside the Apple Store have the same level of quality to which the apple brand has us accustomed.
