Apple and Intel: The new ARM hardware

When Apple makes itself independent of Intel, it initially sounds logical and consistent. But the necessary adaptation of all Mac software to the new ARM hardware can go wrong.

WIf Apple from Intel making independent and in future equipping its computers with the company’s own processors in ARM architecture, that initially sounds logical and consistent: everything from a single source. The in-house developments play at eye level with the Intel cars, and in many special areas such as image processing or artificial intelligence they are faster and more energy-efficient.

However, all Mac software must be adapted to the new ARM hardware. This can go wrong, like the example Microsoft shows. The eternal rival has had some surface notebooks with ARM architecture on offer for years. At the beginning it was announced that “almost all” programs ran without problems on them. Then it was just the “most popular”. Finally, a small selection of 32-bit applications remained.

Microsoft has tried to fool itself. Microsoft did not clearly communicate what every specialist knew. Apple have to do better. The first computers with the new hardware are now available for developers. You do it carefully and don’t promise too much. The process takes years. The Intel processors will continue to be supported for just as long. So no reason for hasty purchase decisions.
