Chaos between Epic Games and Apple related to micro-transactions in the App Store has not yet found a bright spot, and Apple says Epic is deliberately doing it for the sake of popularity.
This was expressed by Apple in a counter argument in court. According to the company from Cupertino, USA, this Epic action is just an action to increase the popularity of the battle royale game.
“Fortnite’s popularity is on the decline, and that has nothing to do with Epic’s lawsuit against Apple. As of July 2020, interest in Fornite has already decreased by 70% compared to October 2019. This lawsuit (and the resulting news headlines) is seen as part of a marketing campaign designed to increase interest in Fortnite, “wrote Apple.
Then, Apple also commented on Epic CEO Tim Sweeney’s statement that only 20% of Fortnite users access games exclusively on Apple devices, and compared to active users, only 10% play via iOS.
“If Epic really cares that they are going to suffer losses from this dispute, they will not try to make it public,” he added.
It seems that Apple has indeed prepared this argument to counter Epic’s claim that Apple has damaged their reputation by blocking it from the App Store, as quoted by detikINET from Eurogamer, Sunday (9/20/2020).
In another argument, Apple says Epic created the problem itself, which could easily be fixed.
“Epic started a fire and poured gasoline into the fire, now they are asking for help to the court to extinguish it, even though Epic can actually do it themselves by following the existing contract and has been profitable as long as they work with Apple for years,” wrote Apple.
“If Epic really wants to save users iPhone still able to access Fortnite, or other developer access to the Unreal Engine, they just need to turn off the ‘hotfix’ and follow Apple’s rules. However, they are holding their consumers hostage in order to win this business dispute, “he concluded.
