“Appeal to Quash Conviction Denied for Father Found Guilty of Murdering Baby Son Who Choked on Tissue Ball”

John Tighe, who was convicted of murdering his infant son Joshua by causing him to choke on tissue, has had his bid to overturn his conviction dismissed by the Court of Appeal. Tighe’s lawyers argued that evidence from the post-mortem report should not have been presented to the jury as the pathologist who carried out the report was not present to give evidence, but the appeal court rejected this argument. Tighe, from Ballyhaunis in County Mayo, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in March 2018. He had previously pleaded not guilty to the murder of six-and-a-half-month-old Joshua Sussbier Tighe in June 2013. Tighe and Joshua’s mother, Natasha Sussbier, had shared custody of the child prior to his death. The prosecution suggested that the killing was prompted by a Facebook message announcing a new relationship between Sussbier and a new boyfriend, Daniel Sommerville.
