Founder of Alibaba Jack Ma reported to have lived in Tokyo, Japan for nearly six months after disappearing from the public eye following China’s crackdown on the tech sector. The Financial Times (FT) reported it on Wednesday (30/11), citing several anonymous sources.

The British newspaper reported that Ma frequented several private clubs in Tokyo and was an “enthusiastic collector” of modern Japanese art, as well as exploring expanding his business interests towards sustainability.

Ma disappeared from the Chinese public after crackdowns by Chinese authorities, including the cancellation of Ma’s IPO or the listing of Ant Group shares and the dumping of Alibaba with a record fine.
In recent years, Chinese officials have taken aim at alleged anti-competitive practices by some of the country’s biggest names. The move was driven by fears that big internet companies control too much data and are growing too fast.
In July, a report said Ma was planning to relinquish control of Ant Group to appease Chinese regulators and revive the initial public offering of the digital payments unit.
Its e-commerce giant, Ali Babafirst reported flat earnings growth last August, when China battling an economic slowdown and a resurgence in COVID-19 cases.
