Apple Announces Upcoming Price & Tax Updates for App Store Commerce
CUPERTINO, CA – July 26, 2024 – Apple is implementing changes to pricing and tax handling for apps, In-App Purchases (IAPs), and auto-renewable subscriptions, impacting developers globally. These updates, detailed in a notification to developers, will be reflected in App Store Connect and take effect in the coming weeks.
Currently, developers who manually manage prices in specific regions will see those prices remain unchanged, separate from Apple’s automated equalized pricing system. Developers can adjust prices for apps, IAPs, and subscriptions at any time through App Store Connect.
Key Changes Effective August 4th:
A meaningful shift concerns auto-renewable subscriptions in Austria, Germany, and Poland. Starting August 4th, any price increase for these subscriptions will require explicit customer consent to continue renewing.
Price Increases On/After August 4th: All subscribers will be prompted to agree to the new price. If consent isn’t granted or action isn’t taken, Apple will repeatedly request consent via email, push notifications, and in-app messaging until the subscription expires at the end of the current billing cycle.
Price Increases Scheduled Before August 4th: Existing notification criteria will remain in effect, even if renewal occurs after August 4.For annual subscriptions, this could extend renewals as late as August 2026. Developers should consult Apple’s documentation regarding consent requirements based on the size and frequency of price increases.
Apple advises developers to avoid scheduling price increases between August 2nd and August 4th to ensure a smooth transition.
