Apophis asteroid sped up. May it collide with the Earth? When it passes the Earth

The asteroid Apophis called the “god of chaos” sped up. The facility is approximately 325 meters wide and is classified as the third highest risk on the Palermo Technical Impact Risk Scale. Its collision with the Earth would cause an explosion with a strength equal to 880 million tons of TNT. Scientists emphasize that the risk of a collision still exists.

Asteroids Apophis, known as the “god of chaos”, accelerated due to the heterogeneous radiation, astronomers at the University of Hawai said. The gigantic object is under the constant observation of scientists.

The asteroid has suffered the so-called the Jarowski effect, in which rotating asteroids radiate energy under the influence of sunlight, which acts like a jet engine. The first encounter with the asteroid will take place in 2029. Then it will pass our planet more than 30,000 km away. Yet another meeting it may prove disastrous for us.

The Apophis asteroid is about 325 meters wide. It is known that the force with which it would hit the Earth would be equal to an explosion of 880 million tons of TNT. A collision with Earth may already take place on April 12, 2068.

– The new observations we obtained with the Subaru telescope earlier this year were good enough to reveal Apophis acceleration. They show that the asteroid is moving away from a purely gravitational orbit by about 170 meters per year, which is enough to sustain the 2068 collision scenario with Earth, says Dave Tholen.

These calculations rank the asteroid Apophis as the third highest threat on the Palermo Technical Impact Risk Scale. In this respect, it is only ahead of the asteroid (29075) 1950 DA and the asteroid Bennu.

What is the real risk of an asteroid hitting Earth? According to the researchers, it is currently 1 in 150,000. At 29,075 (1950 DA), the risk is estimated at 1 in 8,300 and for Bennu it is 1 in 2,700, according to Focus magazine.
