Jakarta, law-justice.co – A spike in Covid-19 cases and the emergence of flu in Europe put the risk of becoming a deadly double epidemic (twindemic).

“It is very clear that this crisis is not behind us. We are at a defining moment,” said EU health commissioner Stella Kyriakides, quoted by CNBCIndonesia.com, Thursday (9/24/2020).

The flu began to emerge due to the approaching winter time in Europe. Kyriakides also warned of the risk of a potentially deadly “Covid-19 and flu twindemic” and urged the government to ask people to inject seasonal flu vaccines and apply social distancing to reduce transmission of the coronavirus.

“This may be our last chance to prevent a repeat last spring,” added Kyriakides.

The results of a study by scientists at Public Health England (PHE) released this week showed that people who tested positive for flu and Covid-19 more than doubled their risk of death, compared with those who only had coronavirus.

In short, adults who are exposed to the flu have a high risk of contracting Covid-19, and vice versa.

The seasonal flu in Europe causes between 4 and 50 million infections each year, but this depends on whether the region has a severe or relatively mild flu season. It is estimated that 15,000 to 70,000 Europeans die each year from flu.
