Applications Open for Prestigious Fellowships in Contemporary Asia Studies at Stanford University
Stanford University’s Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC) is now accepting applications for a range of fellowships focused on contemporary Asia, with appointments beginning in fall quarter 2026. These opportunities are designed to support multidisciplinary research across a variety of crucial areas.
APARC offers several distinct fellowship programs:
Asia Health Policy Program Postdoctoral Fellowship: This one-year fellowship supports a recent PhD recipient conducting original research on contemporary health or healthcare policy relevant to countries in the Asia-Pacific region, with a particular emphasis on developing nations. The application deadline is December 1, 2025.
Japan Program Postdoctoral Fellowship: A one-year fellowship supporting research on contemporary Japan across disciplines including political science, economics, sociology, law, policy studies, and international relations. The application deadline is December 1, 2025.
Shorenstein Postdoctoral Fellowship on Contemporary Asia: APARC will award two one-year postdoctoral fellowships to junior scholars researching political, economic, or social change in the Asia-Pacific region (Northeast, Southeast, and South Asia), or international relations and international political economy within the region. The application deadline is December 1, 2025.Stanford Next Asia Policy Lab (SNAPL) Fellowships & Visiting Positions: SNAPL, led by Korea Program Director Gi-Wook Shin, is also offering opportunities.
Next Asia Policy Postdoctoral fellowships (2 positions): These two-year fellowships, beginning in fall quarter 2026, are available in four thematic tracks: “Talent Flows and Development,” “Nationalism and Racism,” “U.S.-Asia relations,” and “Democratic Crisis and Reform.” Fellows will lead a thematic research group and contribute to student programming. The application deadline is December 1, 2025.
Visiting Fellow positions (2 positions): One-year positions open to researchers and professionals from the Asia-Pacific region holding a phd or demonstrating a considerable record of achievement related to SNAPL’s research themes. One position is specifically dedicated to research on the Philippines. The application deadline is March 1, 2026.
