Two climbers died after falling from the rothorn crest, at 3,150 meters above sea level, in Val d’Ayas (Aosta). The bodies were recovered by the Valle d’Aosta Alpine Rescue. The alarm went off yesterday. The searches went on all night with ground crews. This morning the helicopter overflight allowed the sighting and subsequent recovery of the bodies.

The victims are Nicola Bertola, 39, and Erika Giorgetti, 36. Bertola was originally from Vercelli but had lived for some time in Ayas, where he worked with the snowcat during the winter and as a craftsman in the summer. He was a volunteer mountain rescue worker. Erika Giorgetti was a regional employee. Originally from Milan, she was a resident of Morgex but had been living in Ayas for about a year. The two fell for a hundred meters during the ascent of the Rothorn, a ridge on the border between Ayas and Gressoney. At the time of the accident they were tied up in storage, therefore it is not excluded that one of the two fell and dragged the other downstream. They were last seen around 1pm on August 20. They had left Champoluc and should have returned by evening. The bodies were transferred to Ayas cemetery for the coroner’s disposal. The Aosta Valley Forestry Corps also participated in the mission.

This is the third fatal accident in the area in recent days. On Wednesday a mountaineer died when he fell into a crevasse on the French side of Mont Blanc. Yesterday a woman lost her life in the area of the Gran Paradiso park.
