A capella is singing without instrumental accompaniment. The compositions of various genres can be performed in this way by both a solo singer and a group. For the sixth year, the vocal ensemble “Latvian Voices” has been passing on its knowledge of this form of singing to anyone who wants to improve.
“Latvian Voices” singer Laura Jēkabsone is convinced: “Anyone can sing, absolutely anyone, and that’s why anyone who really wants to can become an a capella singer, because you have to really want to become an a capella singer. This genre is not easy and requires effort, greater work resources, but the result brings pleasant fruits of labor.”
The vocal ensemble “Alba” came from Talsi region to participate in a capella master classes, its representative Astra Arbidāne admits to “ReTV” that this is a valuable challenge for them: “I’ve been singing for ten years, but I’m a complete amateur, I don’t know the notes. But, as you can see, singing it doesn’t matter that the person doesn’t know the notes at all. We got a new manager and the repertoire got complicated, the bar was raised higher, we’ll try to keep up with it now.”
On the other hand, Edvīns Kevingš came to Latvia even from Switzerland to develop his a capella singing skills: “I have always been very interested in the style of jazz music and the a capella style as well. I have sung in one other a capella group in Switzerland, and when I saw that there was an opportunity, I think – you must come.”
Jēkabson says that during these three days, the vocal ensembles will have the opportunity to improve not only their vocal skills, but also to improve the a capella sound of a song included in their repertoire. On the other hand, in the final concert, the participants will sing a jointly created ensemble, performing a newly arranged composition. This concert will also feature new pieces of Ukrainian folk music arranged by artists around the world.
“We received more than 20 new specially created compositions and we will perform the five best ones right at the final concert. And a very special guest for us at the final concert will be the Ukrainian singer Marija Savenko,” emphasizes Jēkabson.
