Antwerp man dies after car ends up in canal … (Veurne)

In the late afternoon, two passengers in a passenger car died in a traffic accident in Veurne in West Flanders. It would be two young people, one of them from Antwerp.

The two were in a BMW that got off the road on the Boonakkerstraat between Beauvoorde and Bulskamp. The accident happened just past the bridge over a stream in an S-turn. The car rolled over and ended up on its roof across the canal. Due to the heavy rain, there was a lot of water in the canal.

The police, a MUG service and the fire brigade with divers were quickly on the spot. With the crane arm of the fire truck, the car could be quickly lifted out of the canal. Both occupants were found to have died on arrival of the emergency services. It is not clear exactly when the accident happened, because there were no witnesses.

Straight ahead in a bend

It was a passing motorist who saw the car turned upside down in the water and called the emergency services. That happened around 5 p.m. The two occupants turned out to be a young man and a woman. Their identification was difficult. The man, who is in his late twenties, could be identified after a while, he is from Antwerp. The woman had no papers in her pocket and has yet to be identified.

Research expert

After the accident, the police completely closed Boonakkerstraat to traffic and notified the public prosecutor’s office. He sent an expert on the spot for investigation. The Veurne public prosecutor’s office is further investigating the facts and will not communicate for the time being.
