Antwerp hospital recalls nearly 100 patients after disinfection error

The hospital discovered in October that an error had been made in maintaining a device that controls an endoscope disinfection bath.

Lhe Antwerp Saint-Vincent hospital of the GZA group sent a letter to around 100 patients inviting them to come for a blood test. Patients are at risk of infection as a result of an error in disinfecting endoscopy equipment.

The hospital discovered in October that an error had been made in maintaining a device that controls an endoscope disinfection bath. The technician exchanged two tubes when connecting the device, which may have resulted in improper sterilization of the devices.

Because of this error, about 100 patients who have had an endoscopic examination during this period are at risk of infection. They all received a letter urging them to have a free blood test as soon as possible and within six months.

“This is the worst-case scenario,” said spokeswoman Hilde Brems. “The devices are indeed cleaned after use, but we cannot guarantee 100% that no infection has developed. “

Although the risk is minimal, the hospital wants to take responsibility. In addition, GZA plans to take legal action against the manufacturer who made the mistake. “Our legal department is currently looking into the matter,” says Hilde Brems.
