The tour bus rolls up late, but when it finally arrives at Eichplatz, cell phones are pulled out, there is applause and cheers. The approximately 350 people (official police information) who set out for Jena city center on Saturday afternoon wanted to listen to those who have become pop stars among corona deniers in recent months. Above all, an ear, nose and throat doctor, Bodo Schiffmann.

The self-proclaimed lateral thinkers chose Jena for a stopover on their “Corona Info Tour”. In addition to Schiffmann, who runs his dizziness clinic in Sinsheim, entrepreneurs Wolfgang Greulich, lawyer Ralf Ludwig and Samuel Eckert, who wins his fans as a religious preacher on YouTube, got out. His parish, the Seventh Day Adventists in Baden-Württemberg, publicly distance themselves from him.

Everyone is united by the conviction that the corona pandemic is a lie. For this purpose, facts are invented themselves. Schiffmann recently complained that several children had died from wearing masks. He could not prove this. The police in Munich and Schweinfurt, where this is said to have occurred, rejected the false news. A funeral home even had to publicly ask for respect for the family of a deceased child whose cause of death “has absolutely nothing to do with the coronavirus”.

“Mental disharmonies” made people sick

The “lateral thinkers” who were previously in Bamberg were able to express their criticism of the state in Jena thanks to the freedom of assembly. Citizens who stand behind the measures to protect against infection would obediently serve the state, which is governed from “top to bottom,” says Greulich, who also means: “It may be that people die, but they always died.” Sick only become those who have had “mental disharmonies” before. There are also rhetorical attacks against Chancellor Angela Merkel, virologists, the media and Bill Gates.

Ralf Ludwig compares the current situation with the Reichstag fire of 1933, which helped Adolf Hitler to establish the dictatorship. Samuel Eckert boasts of “taking apart” basic studies by virologists. And ENT doctor Bodo Schiffmann basically considers the masks to be harmful to health.

Police use loudspeaker to remind people to wear a mask

At the beginning, however, as the leader of the meeting, Schiffmann had to read out the demonstration requirements. They stipulate that the participants keep a distance of at least one and a half meters and wear a mouth and nose covering. Schiffmann asks: If you do not have a certificate, you should put on your mask, “I think that is no problem for adults”. The will to adhere to the requirements seems to be there, but there is a lack of implementation.

The Jena assembly authority and the operations management of the Schiffmann police had to remind them of the conditions three times. He lets his followers fly like helicopters: Arms outstretched and turning, there has to be that much distance. But even after three quarters of an hour, masks can only be seen in about half of the participants over the mouth, sometimes also pulled over the nose, which is why the police finally used the loudspeaker to make an announcement. Several dozen people still appeared to have a medical certificate afterwards. All in all, Susan Volkmann-Schwind, acting head of the Jena Public Order Office, sums up that the participants “mostly complied with the requirements”.
