Another walkout at the Port of Montreal

In addition to the Port of Montreal longshoremen who are on strike for four days this week from Monday to Thursday, the auditors have sent a notice of walkout.

About 70 union members should therefore not work from Wednesday morning to Friday morning at the two terminals of the Termont company. Having a collective agreement different from that of the longshoremen, the auditors accuse this company of wanting to cut their jobs. Their job is to coordinate the handling of containers by the longshoremen.

Their union says if the Maritime Employers Association does not uphold the job security provisions of their collective agreement, there will be no return to the bargaining table. These union members have already walked out last week.

The labor dispute at the Port of Montreal sparked sparks last week between employers and the 1,150 union longshoremen who have been without a contract since December 2018.

There were in particular moments of great tension during which around twenty executives and security guards were said to have been physically attacked on Wednesday by longshoremen.

The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) has opened an investigation for theft and assault. But given the turn of events, Termont Montreal and Montreal Gateway Terminal (MGT), the two main container operators of the Port of Montreal, temporarily suspended their activities Friday to ensure the protection of their person and their facilities.
