Another prestigious prize for Meskerem Mees: Music Moves Europe Award, for young talent with an international future

Who is Meskerem Mees?

Singer-songwriter Meskerem Mees was born in Ethiopia and came to Belgium through adoption. She won in 2020 “Humo’s Rock Rally” and immediately stood out with her debut single “Joe”. She has her first record “Julius” out, scored a radio hit together with Tourist LeMC, “No mans land”, and strings together nominations and awards for her fragile guitar music. She performs live with her regular cellist Frederik Daelemans.

Mees has previously won an important international award: at the prestigious Jazz Festival in Montreux the prize for young talent in Switzerland. “With her beautifully composed music, her magnetic presence and her special velvet voice, she was a true revelation during the competition,” it sounded there.

In our country, Meskerem makes the most chance of 4 MIAs: best alternative, author-composer, breakthrough and solo female. The prizes will be awarded on April 30.

Corona crisis or not: last summer Meskerem Mees played her first foreign concerts. Isolde Lasoen followed her for it Canvasprogramma “She’s lost in music”, about female artists who are working on their musical path.

Internationally, Meskerem Mees has already stood out across the ocean. In the summer she could be seen on a huge billboard on Times Square in New York, as a sign of Spotify’s Equal playlist. That playlist puts female musical talent in the spotlight.
