It was also the first major display of power since Prayuth lifted emergency measures on October 15. They were meant to stop three months of protests against the government and the monarchy.
“If he doesn’t resign, we should come out and ask him to leave peacefully,” said protest leader Jatupat “Pai” Boonpattararaksa, while people chanted “Prayuth Out.”
The prime minister’s office posted a message on Twitter to say he is not stepping down. He has said the crisis should be discussed in parliament, which will hold a special session on Monday and Tuesday.
But Prayuth’s opponents have little faith in a gathering dominated by his supporters.
Protests since mid-July have exerted the greatest pressure in years on those in power, especially taboo-breaking calls to limit the power of King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s monarchy.
