Anonymous publishes 269 GB of secret data belonging to the American police

269 GB of internal data belonging to the United States law enforcement agencies were published on June 19, by the Distributed Denials of Secrets (DDoSecrets) group. This leak, called “BlueLeaks”, is attributed to Anonymous.

Among the million files revealed, there are emails, videos, recordings and written documents that come from more than 200 US police services, including the FBI.

“This is the biggest hack targeting the American police. It is an unprecedented internal look at state, local and federal agencies charged with protecting the public, including the government’s response to Covid-19 and the Black Lives Matter protests, “said Emma Best, the founder from DDoSecrets to the magazine Wired.

The latter claims that the files were sent to her by a person belonging to Anonymous. The group confirmed by posting a message on Twitter.

Anonymous is said to have exploited a server security breach at Netsential, a web development company whose services are used to centralize documents from American law enforcement agencies.

Sensitive data put online

The information published spans a 24-year period, from August 1996 to June 19, 2020, the day the United States commemorates the emancipation of black slaves in Texas. A date with a particular echo this year, with the anti-racist demonstrations which are multiplying in the country.

Among the hacked internal data, there is a note from the FBI on its surveillance of demonstrators on social networks. We learn in particular that all anti-police messages are transmitted to local law enforcement.

According to Numerama, the American authorities are concerned about “very sensitive” data put online, such as the personal information of the police (telephone numbers, addresses, emails) but also bank account numbers or photos of the criminals targeted by investigations, undermining certain ongoing investigations.
