Anonymous corona inspectors starting next week

The police are gaining an ally in the hunt for those who violate the corona rules. Forty anonymous inspectors and inspectors from the FPS Public Health will now also be able to issue fines. ‘The hard-learning night shop operator will have to pay 750 euros, the customer who buys cigarettes or drinks after curfew, 250 euros,’ it sounds.

Paul Van den Meerssche, head of the Tobacco and Alcohol Control Service, confirms that inspectors will unexpectedly show up at hairdressers, nail studios, shops, tattoo parlors, beauty studios, cafes, chip shops, pita shops … ‘The intention is to check all hotspots for possible contamination ‘, he says. ‘Our core business has been controlling the sale of tobacco and alcohol, cosmetics and e-cigarettes. Naturally, we are happy to help to check compliance with the imposed corona rules. ‘

The 40 inspectors and inspectors have the same powers as police officers. ‘They will draw up official reports and issue fines,’ says Van den Meersch. “But unlike police officers, they cannot collect the fines immediately,” says Kristine De Beule, Deputy Attorney General at the Ghent Court of Appeal.

The rates are fixed: 750 euros for a trader or operator who sins against the corona measures, 250 euros for a person who breaks the rules.

Employers have also been regularly checked by the Social Inspectorate in recent weeks. Inspections are also systematically being increased in the construction sector. Nine out of ten were found to comply with the corona measures.
