Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz: Today a memorial hour in the state parliament | NDR.de – Nachrichten – Lower Saxony

On the occasion of the 76th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the Lower Saxony state parliament is commemorating the victims of National Socialism. NDR.de will broadcast the event live from 10 a.m.

After introductory words by the President of the Landtag, Gabriele Andretta (SPD), the head of the Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation, Elke Gryglewski, will give a speech. The musical pieces “Evening Fantasy” by Viktor Ullmann and “Tranquility of the Area” by Erwin Schulhoff are also to be performed in the visitors’ gallery. Ullmann was murdered in Auschwitz in October 1944, Schulhoff died in 1942 after deportation in a camp in Weißenburg in Bavaria.

Corona measures prevent larger events

Due to the current corona restrictions, no guests will take part in the memorial hour. A large event was originally planned in the Marktkirche in Hanover, but it had to be canceled due to the extended lockdown. The memorial hour is part of the plenary session on Wednesday.

Holocaust Remembrance Day since 1996

On January 27, 1945, the concentration camp in Auschwitz, Poland, was liberated. Holocaust Remembrance Day has been celebrated on this date since 1996. A memorial hour is also planned in the Bundestag on Wednesday. The former chairwoman of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Charlotte Knobloch, and the journalist Marina Weisband speak there.
