Anne Haug talks about Jan Frodeno, Ironman in Hawaii & Corona

Anne Haug made history in 2019 when she became the first German woman to win the Ironman World Cup on Hawaiii. A German also won the men’s race with Jan Frodeno.

The triathlete is a little jealous of these in the current Corona times, as she did in the Instagram interview SPORT1-Moderator Laura Papendick revealed.

“Unfortunately, I am one of the 99.9 percent of all triathletes who do not have a pool with a counter-current system,” Haug said with a laugh when asked about Frodeno’s home Ironman.

All current reports, developments and effects on sport due to the Covid-19 crisis in the Corona ticker!

Haug would not imitate the plan of Frodeno, who does an Ironman in his own four walls on Easter Saturday, anyway: “If I had to run a marathon on the treadmill, I would need three days of physio afterwards. So it’s not particularly for Cash on delivery suitable. “

Haug with a long swim break

Having her own pool would still be helpful for Haug, as she can currently only train properly for running and cycling.

“The problem is swimming at the moment. I’m trying to imitate that on rubber ropes of some kind. But swimming simply cannot be replaced by any kind of apparatus,” said Haug.

The three-week break from swimming is the longest in her career as a competitive athlete. Otherwise, according to her own statement, her life has changed little as a result of Corona.

“I’m used to doing everything on my own. My life is like quarantine,” said Haug with a wink.

Haug over greater attention

Haug didn’t have to process or realize her great triumph in Hawaii: “I don’t do my sport to become a Hawaii or Olympic champion. Of course you always want to win, but above all to get the best out of yourself. My goal is always to be better to become.”

Nevertheless, the public’s attention increased significantly after the victory. “Third place two years ago didn’t interest anyone except maybe the local newspaper. After the victory, the interest was huge. I think my manager got 150,000 emails a day,” said Haug.

No one currently knows whether she will be able to defend her title at all this year or whether the Ironman in Hawaii will have to be canceled due to the corona pandemic. Haug therefore tries to keep her fitness level at a good level and to work on her weaknesses.

Haug is not thinking about the end of his career

The 37-year-old is far from thinking about the end of her career. “I still have so many goals that I want to achieve. And I don’t think age is a limiting factor,” said Haug.

Your goals do not necessarily consist of placements or medals: “I cannot influence how good the others are. But when I have crossed the finish line, I want to know that I gave my all and was better than last year. That is my big goal. “
