Polish Singer Reflects on a Career Defined by Independence and Emotion

Facing a stormy birth on Friday the 13th, 1975, Anita Lipnicka’s life began with a defiant energy that has characterized her decades-long career. Now, at 50, the acclaimed Polish artist embarks on a second installment of her intimate “About Love” concert series, revisiting cherished songs and connecting with audiences on a deeply personal level.

Early Success with Varius Manx

Lipnicka’s musical journey commenced in the 1990s when she joined the band Varius Manx. The group quickly achieved prominence with albums like “Emu” and “Elf,” establishing a strong foothold in the Polish music scene. Despite this initial success, Lipnicka felt a compelling need to explore her individual artistic voice.

She recalled a desire to define herself outside the confines of a pop group. This led her to relocate to London, seeking both artistic freedom and a new sense of identity. It was in this vibrant, yet challenging environment that the foundations for her solo debut, “Everything Can Happen,” were laid.

The Birth of a Signature Song

One of Lipnicka’s earliest compositions during her time in London became the enduring hit, “Beauty and Knight.” “I was 21 when I wrote it. It was created in London, where I found my asylum after a spectacular escape with Varius Manx,” she shared on Facebook. The song’s origins are intertwined with a complex relationship.

In London, Lipnicka met Mark Tschanz, a Swiss musician she described as a captivating, yet ultimately turbulent presence. Their musical collaboration blossomed into a romantic relationship, which she later characterized as toxic. This dynamic served as the inspiration for “Beauty and Knight” (originally titled “Lonely Lover”).

“This time I was coming back to England with a heavy heart, in love with my ears. It was a fairy tale. Hypnotic trans. Total infatuation raised to the level of holiness,”

However, the fairytale proved fleeting. “The infatuation turned out to be fatal, the relationship lasted a few years and did not bring me anything good (except this one song!)” she admitted years later.

Solo Career and Collaborative Ventures

Following her separation from Tschanz, Lipnicka dedicated herself to a flourishing solo career. Her debut album achieved platinum status, and subsequent releases, including “What Really” and “My Eyes Are Green,” solidified her position as a prominent figure in Polish music. According to Statista, in 2023, the revenue in the music market in Poland amounted to US$228.90 million (Statista, 2024).

In 2003, she began a significant artistic and personal partnership with British musician John Porter. Together, they recorded three albums and raised their daughter, Pola. Their union concluded in 2015. A year later, Lipnicka married English graphic designer Mark Grey in an intimate ceremony on the Greek island of Hydra.

“About Love 2” – A Return to Intimacy

After years of duets and collaborations, Lipnicka returned to solo performances with the “On Love” project in 2022. The success of these intimate, atmospheric concerts prompted the creation of “About Love 2,” launching in autumn 2025. The tour will encompass nearly 30 towns, including locations missed during the initial run.

The repertoire will largely feature Polish songs from the 1980s and 1990s, evoking the emotions of her youth, alongside her own ballads. “It may happen that tears will pour up with a hunt. Take a handkerchief with you,” Lipnicka playfully advises audiences.

Authenticity at 50

Now, Anita Lipnicka describes herself as a “relaxed and experienced woman.” She balances her roles as a mother and artist, continuing to resonate with new generations through her honest and emotionally resonant work. She prioritizes authenticity and quality over chasing fleeting trends. “Life is a wonderful journey,” she affirms, showing no signs of slowing down.
