‘Shrek’ Producer to Develop Adult Animated ‘Sherlock Holmes’ Series
Los angeles, CA – A new animated series reimagining the adventures of Sherlock Holmes is in progress, spearheaded by David Lipman, a producer of the Shrek films, and N.P. Sercombe, author of The Unexperguated Adventures of Sherlock Holmes novels. The project, tentatively titled Animated Sherlock, will diverge from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s original stories, instead adapting Sercombe’s books which present “uncensored accounts” of Holmes’ cases as originally penned by Dr. Watson before editorial revisions.
The series aims for a mature audience and will structure seasons around overarching mysteries while maintaining connections to Doyle’s established canon. It promises to delve into the backstories of Holmes,Watson,Mrs. Hudson, and Moriarty “through a contemporary lens aimed at international adult demographics,” according to Variety.
The Unexperguated Adventures of Sherlock Holmes series features 16 entries with titles like A Balls-Up in bohemia and The Mysterious Marriage of the Gay Bachelor, hinting at the series’ more risque and humorous tone. Sercombe,CEO of Harry King Television,is co-producing alongside Lipman.
This marks a new direction for the iconic detective stories, which have seen numerous adaptations, including the current CBS series watson starring Morris Chestnut. While live-action and literary reinterpretations are common, animation represents uncharted territory for the Sherlock Holmes universe. The book series’ website describes the source material as filled with “remarkable frankness, startling humanity, and occasionally shocking revelations.”
