When it comes to the salaries of people performing the most important functions in the state, including parliamentarians, we have an absolute mess and we need to sort it out – said President Andrzej Dera on Friday in “One in One”. He referred to the bill which provides for, inter alia, an increase in salaries for parliamentarians. He also added that it was incomprehensible that a husband had to pay contributions to the first lady.

On Thursday evening, MPs from the Sejm’s regulatory, parliamentary and immunity committee unanimously adopted the bill, which includes, inter alia, increasing the salaries of parliamentarians. Under this draft, the first lady would also receive a salary.

Presidential minister Andrzej Dera, asked in “One for One” whether Andrzej Duda would sign the act, said that he was very cautious about saying whether the president would sign it or not at the beginning of the legislative process.

– I was really shocked by the news that the treasurer of the city of Warsaw earns three times as much as the minister of finance in our country – he admitted. He said that the cuts in politicians’ salaries “unfortunately were for many years the pressure to yield to the tabloids”. He assessed that “a state that respects itself must have a well-set wage grid.”

Noting that the reduction of the salaries of parliamentarians by 20 percent in 2018 was the decision of PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński, he replied that it was a reaction to the issue of awards granted to government ministers Beata Szydło.

Dera: For sure the first lady will have a different status
Referring to the proposed salary for the first lady, the presidential minister said that “it is something incomprehensible that the first lady who has huge responsibilities to represent our country is doing a tremendous job, and this is what all the ladies have done, does not operate at all in the system that the husband must pay the contributions of such a person.”

Asked whether President Andrzej Duda would sign an appeal to repeat the elections in Belarus, Dera replied: “The democratic world says this: it was not fair, free elections, the results are not true.” – So if Belarus wants to move towards democracy, these elections should be repeated – said the presidential minister.

“One very active and aggressive group turned monuments into a battlefield”
Dera also referred to recent incidents involving the hanging of rainbow flags on Warsaw monuments and police interventions. On Tuesday, the rainbow flag appeared on the figure of Bolesław Prus at Krakowskie Przedmieście. There was a report on the web which shows that there were nine officers at the monument.

Dera, when asked if he did not think it was working against the Polish police, said that “the police are committed to obeying the law, not guarding monuments”.

– If one group today, very active and aggressive, made a battlefield out of monuments, violating the legal order, the police are responsible for observing this order – he assessed.

When asked if the display of the rainbow flag on the monument to Prus was a battlefield, the Presidential Minister replied that if we imagine that other groups would hang different colors of the flag, “suddenly it turns out that we don’t have any monuments anymore”.
