Andromeda OS is installed on the Lumia 950 and shows what a new Windows Phone would look like

A test build of Andromeda OS was found and installed on a Lumia 950, being able to show how far Microsoft’s work was done. The operating system was supposed to be a version of Windows Phone for devices with two screens, but it was canceled by the company to exchange the software for Android.

When the world was still supporting a third operating system trying its place in the sun, Windows Phone (formerly Windows Mobile) took that spot. Nokia was basically the only company using this software and Microsoft was still working on versions to revamp its entire program. One of the projects was called Andromeda OS.

This Microsoft operating system would be responsible for a kind of restart for Windows Phone, which was no longer doing well in the legs and was starting to migrate to cell phones with two screens, such as the Surface Duo. Windows Central managed to install a test build of Andromeda OS on a Lumia 950, even with some limitations due to the aspect ratio of the display – since this system was made for two screens, in a more square format and not the rectangular one of this Lumia.

A lot of Andromeda OS went to Android from the Surface Duo

The functional part of Andromeda OS shows that much of the work thought by Microsoft for its devices with this system was taken to Android that currently runs on the Surface Duo. The main one is the peek, which shows the clock and the date when the user opens a small part of the device, revealing only a corner of the display.

Another is the experience of using the notebook system. It is always active on Andromeda OS and has become an app for Android, now available on the Microsoft Store. The idea is very similar to what the Galaxy Note does: start writing something with a stylus and save the content on the device.

Looking again at the Surface Duo, the same interface for opening apps in the background was initially developed for Andromeda OS. In both softwares, just swipe your finger from the bottom up on the bottom edge of the phone to see which programs are running in the background.

For the rest, the look of Andromeda OS is very reminiscent of Windows Phone. This means a menu of apps with dynamic tiles and that survived until Windows 10 on PCs. Another similar point with computers is in the control center, available by swiping down from the top of the screen.

There you can adjust features such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or turn on airplane mode. On PC, these quick tweaks are in the lower right corner by clicking on the clock in the toolbar. They were also introduced in Windows 11, but with a more modern look and rounded corners.
