Andrea Sveinsdottir: – – I was very scared

Influences Andrea Sveinsdottir (26), known from reality shows like “Paradise Hotel” and “Love Island”, now tells openly and honestly about the process she goes through to freeze her eggs.

According to the plan, Sveinsdottir was originally supposed to do this a year ago, but due to the corona pandemic, the whole process ended up being put on hold.

Now she says that the process has started again, and that the freezing will be performed at a clinic in Sweden.

Free treatment

The reality profile does not hide the fact that the treatment is a commercial collaboration, which she then receives for free.

When asked if this is something she would have done, if she had not received it for free, she answers the following:

– I probably had not done it completely yet, but I think I would have given it to myself as a 30-year gift. The thought has crossed my mind, but I have not quite known how to proceed in such a situation. So I think it’s nice to be involved and show everyone how this works, she tells Dagbladet.

– Would you have been just as open about the process if it was not a collaboration?

– I probably would have been, yes. For some strange reason, I have a need to be very open about things you may not know much about before and to shed light on things.

To his 45,000 followers on Instagram, Sveinsdottir has also come up with a recent update on how the process is going to date. She says, among other things, that she started the process of taking one injection in the first three days, which then increased by two injections for another five days.

The last thing left is an ovulation syringe that must be taken 36 hours before the actual ovulation.

Unexpected message

So it was last year that the 26-year-old was originally supposed to start the process. Then she first had to undergo a gynecological examination. To Dagbladet, the TV profile admits that it resulted in her receiving a somewhat unexpected message.

– I was going to check that everything was fine and that the levels in the body were good enough. So I took several tests, but then I was told by the doctor that my levels were not very good, so in other words I was not so fertile. The doctor therefore thought it was okay for me to freeze now and not wait, she says.

Now, however, it looks brighter for the 26-year-old, after she had taken new tests at the doctor.

– A week ago I was at the doctor again, we had taken new tests to check if everything was as it should be, something it was. Then I got a proper introduction and got medication with me to start hormone treatment, to make the body ready for egg retrieval, she says.

– How does it feel for you, are you nervous?

– It is very mixed feelings, but I am really looking forward to it. I’m really excited to do this. I have been told that you can get a little pain, but you get anesthesia.

– Horrified me

Sveinsdottir also says that there was one step in particular in the process she did not look forward to.

– It was completely unnatural to put the first syringe myself, so I was very scared. I had to get some help from Morten the first time. I was also unsure how I was going to react to being stuffed full of so many hormones. I also do not go on hormone contraception, since I am already so affected by it. So I was very excited.

She says that there are several reasons why she chooses to carry out the process right now.

– I’m at my best age to freeze the eggs. So it’s a good idea to do it now that I’m still quite young, she says and continues:

– I can still be unsure if I want children at all, but I am also a person who can suddenly feel like it. Therefore, I thought this would suit me, one day I might want it.

– Effective marketing

When Dagbladet contacts anthropologist Kristin Engh Førde, who is a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies at UiO, she is clear on what Sveinsdottir’s openness can lead to.

– Do you think this will lead to more people doing it?

– Yes, I think it can do that quickly. Egg freezing for non-medical reasons has only been available for one year in Norway, and many in the target group are not aware that it is possible. So the clinic that has sponsored Sveinsdottir probably has an expectation that this is effective marketing, Engh Førde believes.

When asked if there are any consequences of freezing eggs, she answers:

– It is intended to extend women’s fertile time, in such a way that one can potentially have children with the frozen eggs at an age where fertility is reduced. In this sense, it can be said that it increases women’s room for maneuver. But it has also been shown that only a small minority of women who freeze eggs actually have children using these eggs.

At the same time, Engh Førde also points out that it is an expensive process that can be physically demanding, and which is also not entirely without risk, as is the case with all medical interventions.
