I think that the things that make us proud as a country and mainly belong to our identity will be affected to a limited extent, Dutch innovation or German reliability will always come to the fore, even with a closer EU.

It may not be a completely correct comparison because our situation is different, but I make it careful anyway. You notice that various American states have their own identity.

Sovereignty is a somewhat more difficult story, however, and it has to do with pride and identity. Haven’t heard a single person in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, France or Belgium who has called themselves a citizen of the EU, there is not really a collective notion of “We are Europeans”. Few countries feel for a European army, for example, or more standardized matters such as tax systems.

The current way of functioning of the EU is very inefficient in my opinion and simply costs too much money and yields too little. Also look at the hassle and indecision surrounding the refugee crisis.

However, I think that the moment we put our “pride” aside, we find out that we are less affected in our identity than we think, personally I would like it if laws and regulations across the continent become more harmonized and you for example, you don’t have to put twenty stickers on your car when you travel through the various Member States.

However, this will take quite a few years, I think, if it ever gets that far, in addition, in my opinion, it is probably more plausible that more harmony will first be reversed between the like-minded countries.

However, a positive thing about Brexit is that we can now monitor what actual effects an exit from the EU actually entails and how this has and will have an impact on, in this case, the entire United Kingdom, the EU and other parties.
