Suspect in Utah Valley University Shooting Arrested After 33-Hour Manhunt
OREM, Utah – Authorities have arrested a suspect following a 33-hour search connected to the fatal shooting of a student at Utah Valley University (UVU) on Tuesday. The arrest concludes a tense examination that involved the FBI, local law enforcement, and a public appeal for information.
The shooting, which occurred in an outdoor quad on the UVU campus, claimed the life of student Derek kirk. The incident prompted a large-scale response and left the university community shaken, raising concerns about campus safety and the potential for further violence. The swift apprehension of a suspect offers a measure of relief, but the investigation continues to determine the full scope of the events and potential motives.
Investigators identified the suspect through a combination of forensic evidence and surveillance footage. The FBI released images of a “person of interest” wearing distinctive clothing – sunglasses, Converse shoes, and a long-sleeved black top featuring an American flag and an eagle - which proved crucial in the investigation.
Evidence collected at the scene indicated the suspect fired at Kirk from a rooftop before descending from the building and fleeing on foot. Palm impressions left on the roof’s edge and a shoe print matching the suspect’s footwear provided key forensic leads. CCTV footage tracked the suspect’s movements across a grassy area and into a wooded area where the suspected firearm was later recovered.
During the investigation, authorities briefly detained another individual for questioning, but later released them. A separate individual, captured in viral videos circulating on social media immediately after the shooting, was also taken into custody but quickly steadfast not to be involved in the incident.
The arrest marks a important growth in the case, and further details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses. UVU officials have pledged to cooperate fully wiht law enforcement and to provide support to students and staff affected by the tragedy.
