An optimistic marriage will save you from dementia

Researchers analyzed data for nearly four and a half thousand heterosexual couples over the age of 50. Information about these people has been collected for eight years. At the start of the study and then every two years, the spouses were tested for optimism, as well as for the state of intellectual abilities and psyche.

Analysis of the collected information showed that a high level of optimism is associated with a decrease in the risk of age-related memory impairment, other cognitive functions, and the appearance of mental disorders. All these changes are a harbinger of the development of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. However, the same effect is observed if a positive outlook on life, confidence in a better future, happiness and energy do not radiate yourself, but your husband or wife, the researchers note.

“We spend a lot of time together with our partners,” one of the authors, William Chopik, explained. – If they remain optimistic, it positively affects your whole life together. A happy, cheerful husband or wife is more likely to inspire their spouse or spouse to lead a healthy lifestyle, be physically active, eat right, and remember to take medicine. ”
