An offer from New York

Eliott Erwitt „California“

For this later, large-format gelatin silver print, Grisebach expects 8,000 to 10,000 euros. Erwitt took the motif in 1955.

Düsseldorf For the anniversary auctions, Grisebach has a photography offer that is highly unusual for German standards. Not only do the just over 120 lots announced for December 1st come from just one New York collection. In addition, the Berlin auction house puts the lower estimate at 1.3 million euros, which has not yet been there in this country.

Grisebach is rightly proud of the “spectacular offer” according to the press release, which includes “works of museum importance and breathtaking quality and beauty”. This is seen as proof of trust in the German market and one’s own competence. “We have never had such a volume from a single collection,” added managing director and photo expert Diandra Donecker when asked.

Donecker describes the consignor as a long-standing customer, “relatively old like almost everyone in the industry”. Committed to discretion, of course she does not comment on his identity.

Anyone looking at the sample images selected for publication may, however, assume that the anonymous collector is a connoisseur who found the best on the market that important and sought-after artists created. Maybe even a dealer of the caliber of Harold Greenberg, who is well connected in Germany, who is now parting with the last parts of his own collection.

In 2018, Greenberg had already sold 447 photos by 191 artists to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Here a central accent was on the image of man and social documentary photos. Topics that also play an important role in the Grisebach bundle.

Richard Avedon „Dovima with Elephants“

One of the top lots from Grisebach: at least 100,000 to 150,000 euros are expected for the gelatin silver print, which was pulled off before 1964. The motif was taken in 1955.

The most highly endowed lots in the Grisebach offer are, however, assigned to fashion photography. For example Helmut Newton’s famous picture of the four unclothed star mannequins, “They are coming (Dressed) Paris”, taken in 1981 from below, valued at 150,000 to 200,000 euros.

Or Richard Avedon’s glamorous fashion shot from 1955, in which top model Dovima in a black evening dress by Christian Dior poses between two circus elephants. Cost item 100,000 to 150,000 euros.

All in all, only prints of analogue photography as well as individual one-offs will be called up, including a “photogram” by László Moholy-Nagy enlarged from a repro negative, which is estimated at 75,000 to 90,000 euros. These are joined by Harold Edgerton’s picture of a drop of milk shot through, Lotte Jacobi’s “Photogenics”, rayograms by Man Ray and a photo collage by Willy Zielke.

As can be seen in the catalog article, the bundle contains rare early prints as well as later prints and editions. This also suggests that a dealer was at work here who was keen to make such central works in photographic history accessible to enthusiasts.
