An immense crowd for Fossano’s farewell to his brothers who died in Castelmagno: “From this night in the sky five more stars” – La Stampa

An immense crowd, today (Friday 14 August), in the Cathedral of Fossano, gathered around the families of Elia and Nicolò Martini, 14 and 17 years old, “Little brothers of the stars” who died with three other young friends in the tragedy of Castelmagno. They lived in San Sebastiano di Fossano, but spent every summer in the Chiotti hamlet, in the village of the upper Valle Grana, to support father Luca, mother Barbara and uncle Loris, who are part of a historic family of margari.

“There are many whys we do not know how to answer – he said, in the homily, the bishop of Cuneo and Fossano, monsignor Piero Delbosco – And this disaster puts a strain on our faith. From Wednesday’s dismay to yesterday’s silence. Today is an occasion to ask God for the gift of true faith. Today the strength of human solidarity is expressed here, which we must find not only in moments like these, looking towards the sky, as Elia and Nicolò did that evening. Looking at it, from today we will see five more stars». Then the moving memory of the friends of San Sebastiano, who only went up to Castelmagno on Sunday to celebrate Nicolò’s 17th birthday.

“You managed to get us all together again – one of them read – but this time, not to celebrate. Smiling was your strong point, making us smile maybe it was even more so. And that’s why partying will never be the same without you. On Saturday night we expected your return from the mountain, to make sure it started on the right foot. Yours was not a job, but a great passion. You have gone to the place you loved most ».

And again: «You managed to enter everyone’s heart, you were an excellent mentor for your brother Elia, who despite his shyness was beginning to make himself known for the beautiful person he was. Nico, these are few words to be able to thank you for everything you have done. We will not forget you. Hi guys, take a little bit of attention to us from up there, and give the strength to your parents to be able to go on ». The parish priest of San Sebastiano, Don Danilo Bedino, concluded the ceremony by addressing the young people: «You have been very dear these days. I simply ask you this: in life, always know how to do something for others, it’s worth it. To Elia and Nicolò, a goodbye to God “.
