In her homeland, Mariam Nabatanzi is called “Mama Uganda” – and not without reason. The 43-year-old has given birth to 44 children. This makes her the most fertile woman in the world, but behind this phenomenon is a rare disease. After six children died, Mariam is still the mother of 38 children – 20 girls and 18 boys. The East African woman had only one child, otherwise there were four twins, five triplets and five quadruplets. When she was examined because of the accumulation of multiple births, the doctors discovered a rare hereditary disease.
Doctors diagnosed hereditary disease
dr Charles Kiggundu, a gynecologist at Mulago Hospital in Uganda’s capital Kampala, told monitor.co.ug: “In her case, it is a genetic predisposition to hyperovulation, the release of multiple eggs in one cycle, which increases the chances of multiple births significantly increased.” However, in previous investigations, Mariam was warned not to stop giving birth because it could be dangerous for her. Side effects would include accumulation of fluid in the abdomen or chest, blood clots, kidney failure, torsion of the ovaries, or breathing problems.
The doctors advised the mother of 44 against contraceptives
According to an article from thesun.co.uk, the Ugandan woman was told that contraception was not an option for her as she was very likely to develop serious health problems. While there are treatments for hyperovulation, they are very hard to come by in rural Uganda.
Father left the family and took all the savings with him
Although her children were born by “God’s grace”, the circumstances were not so divine: At the age of twelve, Mariam was forced into marriage against her will, and she had her first child at the age of 13.
The biological father of all children left the family when the youngest was born. The now deceased ex-husband not only made off, but also took all his savings with him. “My husband has done me a lot of harm. I spent all my time taking care of my kids and working to earn some money,” said the mother of 38. An incredible challenge for the single parent.
